Analysis of Florida Transit Bus Accidents
The FDOT Research Ideas project on System
Safety plans and Accident Tracking Analysis completed in 1999,
recommended that all Florida transit systems begin collecting a
core set of accident characteristics to be monitored and
analyzed on a statewide basis. This project uses this data to
track and analyze accident occurrences and causal factors for
four transit systems in Florida – Gainesville Regional Transit
System, Sarasota County Transportation Authority, Volusia County
(VOTRAN) in Daytona Beach, and Lee County Regional Transit
System in Ft. Myers. In addition, a database was developed for
medium transit systems to easily track and analyze their
accident data in aggregate over time, allowing them to be able
to identify trends in occurrences and the effectiveness of
safety programs. A copy of the final report is available here
in pdf format and in
HTML format, and the accident database
is located at

under Florida Transit Bus Accidents. For more information, contact Debbie Sapper at
