Project Scope:

In January 2015, the National Center for Transit Research completed a report on the state of automated vehicle (AV) technology as it pertains to transit. The report was entitled “Evaluation of Automated Vehicle Technology for Transit”. It found that the operational use of AV technology by transit agencies in the U.S. was limited to a few prototypes. Furthermore, it found that, with one exception, there were no immediate plans by bus manufacturers to add AV technology to their vehicles. In the one year since that report was published, there have been new developments in the realm of automated transit so that an updated report is warranted.

Tasks/Deliverables:

Task 1 – Inventory of currently available Light Automated Transit Vehicles

Following up on the NCTR report completed for the FDOT “Evaluation of Automated Vehicle Technology for Transit” (BDV26 977‐07) published in January 2015, an up to date inventory of light automated transit vehicles in current operation throughout the world will be summarized.  Task 1 will include a scan of the internet for articles related to automated transit vehicles and possibly e-mail and/or phone correspondence with the developers of such technology.

Task 2 – Updated Report

The information gathered in Task 1 will be put into an updated report similar in format to the 2015 report. It will summarize the current state of AV technology as it pertains to public transit with an eye toward identifying potential demonstration projects within Florida.

Project Schedule:

It is anticipated that the research project outlined in the scope of work will be completed within three (3) months.

Project Budget:

$52,540
